WATER TOURISM
The natural characteristics of Bulgaria give admirers of the sun, air and water a perfect chance to practice so called water tourism.The northern and eastern borders of the country are entirely water. There are too many rivers, dams where all year round you can practice water tourist activities. This is an alternative form of spending a holiday for people of all ages. The diversity of the destinations as well as practicing different kind of activities turn this kind of tourism into a very attractive one. The beginning is dated at the end of the 19th century, when people began to sail on little boats. In 1889 ‘’LEBED’’ tourist society was founded. During the next several years this activity became more and more popular. The Federation of water tourism came in existence. People organized sailing tours on Bulgaria’s biggest rivers: Iskar, Ogosta, Yantra, Vit, Osam, Struma, Maritza, Tunja, Arda as well as an international sailing tour on the Danube. The federation also organizes tours around famous Bulgarian dams, a great chance to witness spectacular views. The possibility to combine water tourism with hiking near the rivers and dams is the reason why so many people are fond of it.
