The Bulgarian national currency is the Lev, which is divided in 100 stotinki (in English cents). The Bulgarian National Bank is the only currency issuer in the country and the sole manager of the state's funds and the funds of all state companies and institutions. On the 5th of July, 1999, the Bulgarian National Bank carried out the already proclaimed revaluation of the local currency, issuing new banknotes and coins.
The necessary rules and laws were all adopted from the Council of Ministers and the National Assembly long before the revaluation took place. It was carried out in order to simplify all kinds of payments, as well as accounting and foreign currency exchange. Simultaneously the new coins and banknotes were introduced in circulation.
Bulgaria is an European country, in which many major European and rest-of-the-world banks have branches.
All major credit cards are accepted at the big hotels, car rentals, some restaurants and supermarkets. The stickers on the entrance doors usually show which credit cards are accepted.
