Sveti Vlas

Location: The village resort Sveti Vlas is situated on the southern slopes of the Balkan mountain in vicinity to the Black Sea coast. It is 10 km away from the historical town of Nessebar and has 3000 citizens. Sveti Vlas (Saint Vlas) covers the northern part of the gulf which lies between the international resort Sunny Beach and holiday village Elenite, and the town of Bourgas is located 40 kilometers southwards.
History and Climate: The Thracian settlement, founded in 2nd century AD and called "Larisa", gains its present name - Sveti Vlas - in 14th century, by the name of the stockman and healer patron of the tradesmen.
There was a monastery named after him that existed during 14-18th centuries, which was burned during the numerous pirates' attacks. Sveti Vlas is a saint acknowledged by both the roman-catholic and the eastern-orthodox churches. There were four other monasteries in the village neighbourhood. The village of Sveti Vlas is one of the oldest settlements in the Nessebar region. During the Ottoman occupation period it was known with several names and all of them were names of monasteries. The Turkish called it Kjuchuk monastery, and in the old administrative registers it was mentioned as the village of Manastir (Monastery).
The village was officially named Sveti Vlas after 1886, when Southern Rumelia is reunited with The Bulgarian Principality. The unique location of Sveti Vlas between the mountain and the sea are determinative for its specific climate, which is favourable for treatment of number of diseases. Far away from the noise and the dust of the big city, bordering the mountain and at the same time the sea, it is a wonder ful health centre all year round. Its specific location determines the mild climate with maximum number of sunny days (240-260 per year) and warm winter. The existing of air draughts between the sea and the near mountain defile causes a mild, favourable and unique nature phenomenon - the air is clean of dusts and other unhealthy components.
The natural aerosol of the sea combined with the crystal clear air have strong healing and climatic influence on diseases like asthma and other non-specific chronic pulmonary diseases. Our Black sea coast can be classified as a separate sub-region of the Mediterranean climatic region. It has better climatic indices than more of the popular European resorts. Thanks to this bioclimatic characteristic the natural resources there can be used through all the year for marinotherapy and prophylaxis. Due to these conditions, in vicinity, only a kilometer away, is situated the only Sea Sanatorium in the country.
The combination of Sea and Mountain, as well as the predominant Mediterranean climate make Sveti Vlas one of the preferable tourist places. The territory of the beach is 1,5 km long and average width 16 m. The resort village location has positive demographic characteristics. The main beach streaks are the central one (from Hotel Sineva to Sun Palace complex), the little one (the camping - from Sun Palace complex to Riviera complex) and the beach near the New Marina - the yacht port (under The Monastery complex). At the east end of the beach the local fishermen's base is situated, and near it a new and modern yacht port is being built.

Surrounding areas: The region where the village is situated is the largest tourist zone in Bulgaria. Practically, this is the unrecognized Bulgarian Riviera, including Aheloj , Ravda, Sunny Beach, The Sanatorium (between Sveti Vlas and Zora), Intzaraki, Sveti Vlas, Paradise Beach (Robinzon) and Elenite. The town of Nessebar, one of the oldest in Europe, is picturesquely built on a small peninsula, only 8 km away from Sveti Vlas. Nowadays the town is one of the most preferred tourist places in Bulgaria.
The old town is proclaimed to be a part of the world cultural inheritance and is under the protection of UNESCO. The old buildings have been restored and have been built new but in accordance with the ancient architectural style. Nessebar has inherited the ancient Thracian settlement of Messambria, founded in the 2nd millennium BC. In 510 BC it was transformed into a Greek state-colony by the Dorian settlers and called Messemvria. There was a theatre and a temple of god Apollo. There were silver and bronze coins minted there, and in III century BC - also golden coins. In 72 BC the town was occupied by the Roman legions.
In 812 Khan Krum conquered the town. In 864 Boris I surrendered and the town fell under the reign of the Byzantine Empire, but Tsar Simeon conqu ered it back. From IX century along with the name Messemvria was use also and the Slavic name Messebar or Nessebar. There are 41 churches in Nessebar. Not all of them are preserved in their original magnificence, but their appearance nowadays also attracts the eyes of the admirers: The Old Metropolitan Church - "St. Sofia", the New Metropolitan Church - "St. Stephan", The Church "St. Paraskeva", The Church "Christ The Pantokrator", nowadays - an art gallery, The Church "St. John The Baptist", a masterpiece of the Bulgarian church architecture.
The old Nessebar houses, built in the unique 16-19 century style, are also interesting cultural monuments.

Accommodation and Catering: The blooming of the resort village Sveti Vlas is determined by the growing number of the tourist complexes, hotels and public places. Complex "Manastira" (The Monastery) was built for 7 months only and opened in June 2002. This sea jewel is built right on the seacoast and is a unique combination of ancient Bulgarian architecture, exquisite interior and perfect infrastructure. "Manastira" has 64 apartments and houses and all necessary requirements to ensure a splendid holiday, a tavern, two swimming pools with waterfall and secured parking area. The complex has also a chapel, which is a beautiful element of the whole architectural ensemble. "Briz" is situated in the second land zone behind "Manastira" and is 7107sq.m large. The village built in accordance with the "Old Bulgarian house" architectural style is small, but awesome and has 27 apartments and separate houses. There are also 2 swimming pools, a coffee-bar and secured parking area. The tourists keen on sports can use the tennis court in the complex.
