Another brilliant place with great entertainment and plenty for kids and old to do is the wonderful resort of Golden Sands sitting conveniently close to the spa complex location. The resort of Zlatni Pyasatsi (Golden Sands) is the largest one on the northern Black Sea coast as it is built on more than 1,800 hectares of land. It is situated 18km north of Varna and is bordered to the north by the picturesque village of Kranevo and to the south by the St. St. Konstantin and Elena Resort. The beach of the resort stretches over some 4km with width of up to 100 metres. Almost the entire coast along the resort falls within the boundaries of the Zlatni Pyasatsi natural park, which stretches over 1,320 ha. The Frengenskoto Plato (Frengen Plateau) of limestone structure is perking just above the resort. The area is famous for the purest sand on the Black Sea coast and also abounds of trees and bushes. Mineral water springs, as well as marvelous woods bordering the Frangen Plateau make Golden Sands one of the pearls of the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast.

The impressive Aladzha rock monastery is one of the best preserved rock monasteries, scattered all over the Dobrudzha region. It is situated only a few kilometers above the resort and is also a part of the Golden Sands natural park. Aladzha Monastery is one of the 120 medieval rock monasteries close to the seaside that are rapidly becoming tourism hubs in their own right. The monastery offers an all-the-year-round sense of history and antiquity for both summer and winter tourists. It was founded during the Second Bulgarian kingdom, around the 13th century, and inhabited by hermit monks. It is located in the north-eastern part of Bulgaria, and situated in beautiful lush woodland about 17 km from Varna and four km from Golden Sands. Aladja monastery was opened in 1906 as a museum and tourist site, and was declared a national monument of culture and antiquity. It also houses a small museum that exhibits its colourful history.
Aladja monastery has a church, a smaller chapel and monastic cells that are regarded as important monument of medieval history. This is one of the few preserved and accessible rock monasteries in Bulgaria and conforms to the asceticism and the typically hermit lifestyle of the religious order of monks that lived there. Aladja (meaning multi-coloured in Turkish), due, most probably, to the bright colours of its wall paintings, contains rooms carved into the rocks on two levels in the almost 40-meter high limestone rock. The monks' cells and rooms were carved inside the soft white limestone cliff. This was a retreat and a refuge, as opposed to the confidence and conviction of monasteries like Rila or Bachkovo. The entrance to the monastery is on the eastern side of the first level and at the far end of the entrance hall, behind a stonewall, part of which still exists, was the crypt. On the left side next to the staircase, there is a corridor which leads to the refectory, the kitchen and six hermit cells. The chapel was located in the centre and the western side of the rock hill. Aladja monastery is decorated with religious frescoes, but unfortunately most of them are damaged today. Only few of the frescoes have been preserved well enough to be viewed with any clarity in the chapel.
Having survived turbulent times, it has been a zealous guardian of Bulgarian culture, language and orthodoxy. The monastery's history fascinates visitors and is surrounded in myths and speculation.
Another big attraction nearby are the wonderful Botanical Gardens of Balchik, spreading over ten hectares surround the small summer palace of the Romanian Queen Marie. (The area was part of Romania between 1913 and 1940). The attractive villa has the unusual addition of a minaret.
The gardens are the habitat of over 3000 astonishing plant species of which cacti alone are over 250 so the Botanical Gardens boasts the second biggest collection of cacti in Europe. The gardens are set on a steep hillside and descend in six terraces to the sea - supposedly one for each of the Queen's children. There are over three thousand varieties of shrubs, trees, roses and flowers, set among streams, waterfalls, and ornamental channels. There is a rock garden, a formal French garden with clipped box cones and geometric beds, and an astonishing collection of cacti. Interspersed are stone thrones, seats, pillars and ornaments collected by the Queen.
