Preslav has been the second capital (after Pliska) of the First Bulgarian Kingdom which has existed from 893 till 969. Despite that short period as a capital there has been very intensive construction in Preslav, created in the conditions of an incredible cultural upsurge in Bulgaria. It is no chance that this whole period is called “Golden Age”. While Pliska is in a plain monotonous area, Preslav is in the skirts of the mountain. Preslav has been situated on a huge area for a mediaeval town. Today it will take you more than one day to make a full tour. Before starting to wander through the streets, you should look in at the well ordered museum and to ask about comprehensive information about the town and its sights. They will give you advice for your tour. Do not rely on the map, which usually has to make things easier for tourists, but is complicated and requires a serious geodesic knowledge. The museum is spacious and bright and in it you can become familiar with the monuments, found in the excavation works in the mediaeval town, the ornaments of the Preslavian treasure, the marvellous ceramic icon of St. Teodor Stratilat, painted ceramics and artefacts. There is surely a lot to see in the area. This is why the Municipality is doing different steps in the development of the rural and cultural tourism in the area. The region of the eco routes is with common length 196 km. It combines cycling, walking and extreme tourism among natural sights. The existing conditions of the natural riches and the biological balance are suitable for the development of the eco tourism. All prerequisites for the development of a good tourist activity are available. The modern tendency for life and vacation among ecologically clean nature finds its typical place here. There is increased demand for plots of land for investment and construction of luxurious villas. They match in an original way the buildings with authentic rural exterior. The area is among century old beech-tree, lime-tree, and lilac-shrub woods. The region is rich in medical plants and herbs: wild geranium, thyme, tutsan, milfoil, etc. There is wide variety of game: red deer, roe, wild-boar, etc. The areas through which the eco routes pass are popular for the pure mountainous water, which is in great quantities. There are over 50 wells and stone fountains built.
