Property in Gibraltar Conservative MEP Visits Gibraltar

Conservative MEP Giles Chichester, son of Sir Francis Chichester, comes to Gibraltar to give a talk tonight at the Royal Gibraltar Sea Property Yacht Club at 8.00pm on his father's boat the Gypsy Moth.

Tomorrow he will be meeting the Chief Minister and others, leaving on the evening flight.

Giles has been an MEP for Devon and East Plymouth since 1994, becoming MEP for the South West in 1999.

Since 1999, Giles has been a member of the European Parliament's Committee on Industry, External Trade, Research and Energy (ITRE) and of the Delegation for Interparliamentary Relations with Australia and New Zealand.

Giles' Experience

Giles holds a special position within the Industry Committee, as he has been elected Chairman of the Committee from July 2004.

In the last Parliament, he served as Co-ordinator for the EPP-ED (European People's Party - European Democrats) group members of the Committee. A Co-ordinator combines the roles of whip, leader and spokesman. As he represented the largest political group in the European Parliament, he exerted considerable influence on the work of the committee.

He was the only Conservative MEP to be co-ordinator on a legislative committee and was twice elected to this position by EPP- ED MEPs from all Member States.

He has been personally responsible for four important Reports within the ITRE Committee since 1999.
