Since ancient times this place has been known as a source of legends and myths. One of the most famous is the one for the singer Orpheus, born in the region. Nowadays the mountain offers great opportunities for cultural and recreational tourism. The delicious traditional cuisine, warm welcome of the people and the wonderful songs (one of which is actually transmitted through space), makes Pamporovo a perfect holiday destination. Situated amid the thick pine forests of Rhodope Mountains, Pamporovo is fast becoming one of the most famous Bulgarian mountain resorts. The resort itself is located 1650 m above sea level and the highest point is the mount Snejanka with 1926m altitude. The climate is mild-mountain, with strong influence from the Mediterranean. With an average of over 200 sunny days per year, the resort is known to be the sunniest mountain resort in Europe. Pamporovo offers great skiing conditions with average snow cover of 140 – 150 cm and ski tracks of various difficulties. The alpine tracks are 17,5 km long and the long distance running tracks are 34 km. The resort offers 18 ski lifts, 5 chair lifts and 13 surface lifts with capacity of 8,500 persons per hour. Additional services for skiers include: ski schools, ski kindergartens and 24 hours mountain rescue, to name but a few. The closest airport is the city of Plovdiv, only 85 kilometres away. Since Bulgaria’s accession to the EU (January 2007) it has been reported in the press that low cost carrier Ryanair should be flying to Plovdiv airport very soon, with other low cost carriers possibly following. This will have affect of increasing the already large numbers of tourists to the area.
