Gibraltar property Gibraltar agreement to boost tourism
An historic agreement between the UK, Spain and Gibraltar could mean that the Rock enjoys a major boost from low-cost airlines and is heartily welcome by those looking to buy property in Gibraltar.
After nearly two years of talks, Miguel Angel Moratinos, the Spanish Foreign Minister, Geoff Hoon, the UK Minister for Europe, and Peter Caruana, Gibraltar's Chief Minister, have signed an agreement that should mean improved air services for Gibraltarians.
The deal will open up the possibility of more cheap flights serving the Rock and will also see the introduction of red and green customs channels to improve border flows between Gibraltar and Spain.
Geoff Hoon said: “The Trilateral agreement is truly historic. For the first time, all three parties have negotiated together and have reached agreement together.
“This is ground-breaking in itself. And it demonstrates that constructive dialogue and co-operation is possible. This agreement delivers real, practical benefits to the people of Gibraltar and the Campo region."
The benefits to air travel comes from the fact that Gibraltar will now be covered by EU rules on aviation and means flights will no longer need to take difficult detours to land at the airport.
Last week low-cost operator Fly Gibraltar announced it planned to begin flights to UK and Irish airports, including Stansted, Manchester and Dublin.
