It is a favourite winter destination for more than 450 000 visitors each year as with the construction of the new ski facilities and the two golf courses in the area is expected this number to triple in the next few years. The town of Bansko is situated 160 km from the splendid capital Sofia. It is no obstacle for visitors as a first-class highway connects both destinations and the transfer from the Sofia airport to the ski resort could only be pleasant as you will take delight in the beauties of the countryside. The pretty town of Bansko is situated on the Glazne River, at an altitude of 925 metres. It is the perfect location that makes this destination all-year-round resort. For the last couple of years Bansko has gained the popularity of one of the best resorts on the Balkans due to its well-maintained infrastructure, high quality ski facilities and variety of accommodation grounds. The town of Bansko has rich historical past as the contemporary town origins from a settlement which was inhabited centuries ago by the Thracians, Romans, Byzantines and Slavs. The remains of the ancient fortresses, tombs and citadels, churches and chapels testify the presence of the different historical epochs. In the 9th – 10th century Bansko stood out as a settlement by groping into several districts. During Ottoman Rule, Bansko was known as a centre of stock-breeders and was mentioned in the registers under the name of Baniiska. Until the 18th c. the natives of Bansko were predominantly cattle-breeders and craftsmen, who relied on the vast pastures and rich woods. A great number of water mills, sawmills, fulling mills, workshops for hide tanning, etc. were built along the river Glazne. Soon after then, the town developed as an important trade centre and the lifestyle of the local people drastically improved and this can be seen from the architecture of many of the houses built during this period. The houses built then are two-storey fortress houses with high stone walls and heavy solid gates. This style of architecture reached a boom during the period of Revival. Some of the best examples of the Revival architecture have been preserved to present times and are an object of great interest from tourist as well as from experts. The exhibitions of the icon-painting school and the ethnographic museum of Bansko attract the attention of people visiting the town as well. Bansko is an important cultural centre in the region and aims at becoming a place of traditional cultural events.
