The lovely seaside resort town of Tsarevo, blessed with a unique combination of a warm and safe sea with magnificent beaches, a picturesque mountainous area rich in various plant and animal species, romantic rivers, and authentic traditions, customs and rituals of friendly locals, known as Vassiliko and Michurin in the past, is situated conveniently at the very boundary between Strandzha Mountain and the sea and lies over two small peninsulas around a beautiful bay.

The Strandzha Mountain was declared a natural park in 1995 (the largest one in Bulgaria) and is one of the least explored in Bulgaria, which explains the richness of its wildlife. The mountain also has a lot of caves (particularly in its western part), traces of ancient civilisations, such as stone figures, sun discs carved in stone, Thracian dolmens, fortress walls and sanctuaries, etc. Magic lurks even in the shimmering waters of the biggest river of the region, the Veleka, so timelessly slow in its movement that it seems to be lacking the vigour to make its final plunge into the sea. Instead, all of a sudden, the river disappears beneath a strip of sand right at your feet and there, underneath, it flows into the salty sea. A winding boat ride will take you among water lilies, lianas and slumberous trees - yet another way of immersing in eternal bliss. And yet the real magic is the people, a mysterious blend of down to earth practicality and spirituality. Their true friendliness and warmth are not a smaller merit to this land than all the wealth of the surrounding nature. ‘Welcome’ is what they say - and they mean it! Believe them once, and you will want to stay. It is believed that the name Strandzha comes from the Proto-Bulgarian stem “stran” meaning secluded, remote and mystical. Such is the spirit of this land - a world of unspoiled beauty and natural harmony far from the modern hectic pace of life, a land of ancient glory whose silent witnesses still fascinate with their mysticism and majesty. If one wishes to discover the bliss hidden in the simple things of life, this area is the perfect place to choose. Located on the borderline of Europe, Asia Minor and the Mediterranean, Strandzha enjoys a milder and warmer climate than the other mountain ranges in the country. It is a low mountain with a deeply indented landscape. Its inseparable part is the Strandzha National Reserve, with a sea outlet between the town of Tsarevo and the village of Rezovo. Over 50% of the Bulgarian flora is represented there with a big number of endemic, relict, rare and threatened Red Book species. The geographic and climatic specifics of the Strandzha Mountain has determined the special characteristics of the vegetation which is an intriguing conglomerate of European, Black Sea and Caucasian species, differing in origin, biological peculiarities and level of development. The Strandzha region together with the coastal line is one of the richest in animal species in Bulgaria. The animal diversity and identity is very well preserved for the reason that for a number of decades the access to the mountain has been restricted in view of the proximity of the state border. The Strandzha Mountain also abounds in birds. There are certain times of the year when the number of birds reaches 261, which represents 68% of all the birds found in Bulgaria. The natural beauty of Strandzha bewitches you, while its laid-back rhythm envelops you, so you feel good and at peace with yourself. Your senses are always engaged with the colors and scents of the seaside, the mountain, the river, the rural life. Its beaches are in cozy, crescent-shaped bays, outlined by jagged cliffs, hugged by fresh, dark-green woods. The sand is white and exquisitely fine, the sea hospitable with smooth and gradually descending bottom, the water pleasantly warm and clear. Right at the edge of these wide expanses of superb beach there is deep, cool shade - the mountain with its dense vibrant woods. It is a low, gently rolling mountain with a breathing cover of oaks and shrubs, generously hosting rivers and mineral springs and an amazing variety of birds and animals.

The mountain's villages are also unique in terms of spirit and architecture. The local people are truly genuine and helpful. This area is very beautiful and unspoilt with a depth of history that would occupy the most inquitive mind.

The village of Bulgari is particularly famous for its 'nestinarski' dances (barefoot dance on glowing embers), held on the occasion of village fairs or holidays. The fire dancing ritual comes from an ancient pagan custom. It has been part of the Bulgarian rituals for thousands of years. The ritual is one of a kind in Europe. The ritual is performed on 21 May – the day of St. Constantine and Elena. Accompanied by a bagpipe and the even rhythm of a nestinar’s (fire dancer’s) drum the dancers take steps round the fire with icons in hands. Then they gradually sink into trance. The sight of the dancing barefooted people takes your breath away. The fire dancing is very specific and unique. Unnoticeably the feet of the dancers start moving in a moderate fast step in accordance with the hypnotic melody that fills the night.You are obsessed by the feeling of God’s presence. Yet the dancers are the only ones, who, during the dance, have visions for the future or see saints walking before them treading the embers out.
The ritual is veiled with mysticism and magnetism, but the enigmatic smiles of the native-born keep the secret of this spiritual phenomenon of Strandja.

Nowadays, fire-dancing over ambers is performed every year only by a few “initiated” into the ritual men and women at a mature age. Some of them say they have inherited this gift as a family tradition. Others tell a story of suddenly being inspired while watching fire-dancers perform and lured by an irrational impulse and started dancing themselves.

Some of the contemporary fire-dancers remember the performances of the last authentic fire dancers for whom the ritual had been a religion, a way of life. In the past, this tradition was denounced by the official cultural policy and its upholders were subjected to persecution. After decades of surviving in secret, the tradition gradually started coming back to life and today it is observed at folklore fairs in many regions in the country.

Present-day fire-dancers, just like their predecessors, say they feel a strange anxiety once the moment of the ritual draws near. They say that the minute they step close to the live coals, their feet and palms suddenly chill and only a long time after the dance is over recover to their normal temperature. Underneath their bare feet, the coals glow as if ready to blaze up once again. It is as if the dancers don't feel the fire and cross the fire circle in tiny steps. An inexplicable emotion seizes them, they say. While dancing over the live coals, they hear only the rhythm of the drum and the sound of the bag-pipe, the whole world is as if gone.

No explanation has been found why the bare feet of the fire-dancers are not burnt by the fire. Traditional medicine has sought the answer in the way the fire-dancers carefully press their feet to the coals. The performers, however, claim that they are protected by the saint patrons - St. St. Constantine and Helen, who trace out a path in front of the dancers. Fire-dancers step on the glowing embers with the icon of the two saints in their hands.

The musicians playing in the fire-dancing ritual are also carefully selected. They have, too, inherited their gift as a family tradition. Some of them play only at the ritual. It is a magical experience for them. The musicians know that their music “guides” the fire-dancers. The fire-dancing melodies are handed down from generation to generation and are performed only at the ritual. During the rest of the year, the fire-dancing drum is kept together with the ritual icons in a special chapel. The ritual of fire-dancing is believed to intensify and kindle up the energy of the Sun.
