The complex is situated in the town of Bansko, at the foot of Mount Pirin. Bansko is 160 km south of the Bulgarian capital Sofia, about a two-hour drive from Sofia Airport, with 120 km of motorway for part of the distance, as well as, at 150 km from the Greek sea resort Kavala.
Pirin is a markedly Alpine type of mountain. Its ski runs provide excellent conditions for both professional and amateur skiers. A highly functional network of ski lifts and draglifts has been built here on cutting-edge technology. The ski runs are equipped with safety facilities and excellently maintained. Snow cover lasts from November until May, and there is the additional advantage of snow cannon that can be used during the winter season. Winter snow is abundant, forming lasting snow cover up to 3 metres thick. In January, the coldest month of the year, the average air temperature is minus 1.9 C. In recent years, Bansko has emerged as a leading ski resort in Bulgaria, attracting a growing number of foreign holiday-makers. The skiing conditions are more the excellent - there are 23 cableway facilities in the area, including 10 babylifts, 6 "anchor" type draglifts, and 7 chair cableways. Two quadruple-chair cableways and a draglift went into operation in 2004. Total length of marked ski runs, including ski roads: 56 km. Altitude of highest ski run: 2 560 m. Altitude of lowest ski run: 990 m. About 35% of the ski runs are suitable for beginners, 40% for intermediate skiers, and 25% for advanced skiers. The resort uses 40 snow cannon covering 80% of the ski runs. Bansko resort offers its guests a unique 16-kilometer uninterrupted ski run, equipped with snow cannons and lighting, connecting the highest point with the town of Bansko.
Not surprisingly, the Financial Times recently described Bansko as the best ski resort in Eastern Europe, surpassing two other first-class winter holiday spots in the country, Pamporovo and Borovets, in terms of number, design and equipment of ski runs. This assessment was made after Bansko absorbed the largest amount of investment, over EUR 40 million, in preparation for the ski season for the third year running. The town itself attracts visitors by its 120 cultural monuments, its museums houses, and the permanent ethnographic and Bansko school of icon painting exhibitions. Bansko is an important cultural centre for the region. According to historic records, the settlement was first established about 9th -10th century A.D. on the site where ancient Thracian settlements had existed. In the 18th century it was mentioned as a large and prosperous village of thriving crafts and trade reaching as far as the Aegean and Europe. In the 18th and early 19th century talented painters and woodcarvers created works of art in the houses and churches of Bansko, the Rila Monastery, the monasteries on Mount Athos, Serbia and Macedonia. Just 6 km from the town of Bansko is situated the village of Banya noted for its thermal mineral springs. The resort itself offers excellent conditions for après-ski relaxation. You can spend moments of recreation in one of the numerous rehabilitation centres or swimming pools. Two new golf courses complying with world standards will be built in the area to attract not only the keen lovers of this elite sport but everyone who want to take delight in the calm atmosphere this sport creates.
Bansko also serves as a starting point for trips to many other places of interest, such as the town of Melnik, the Rozhen Monastery, the large cities of Sofia and Plovdiv, the Bachkovo Monastery, the resort towns of Sandanski and Velingrad, and the villages of Leshten and Kovachevitsa, where the architecture is typical of the National Revival Period (18th-19th century). A different type of attraction is offered by the Yagodinska Cave, which is a wonder of nature.
